Guy de Maupassant is a hard author to describe. He branched from harsh, realistic war stories to paranormal horror, and from dramatic tragedies to comedic satire.
Maupassant’s literary work is sentimental when not completely tragic. Stories such as *My Uncle Jules|/onlinereader/my-uncle-jules* and *Miss Harriet|/onlinereader/miss-harriet* avoid climaxes and seem to simply trail off, with the reader and the characters themselves finding no closure.
His horrors are all well written, dealing with both gothic, paranormal horror and the grisly realities of war. Like with American author *Ambrose Bierce|/author/ambrose-bierce*, the grim experiences in his war stories outscare the supernatural entities in his pure horror.
