Friedrich Kreutzwald is considered the father of Estonian literature. He was the first to gather together the Estonian folktales, creating his book: *Eestirahwa Ennemuistesed Juttud|https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=coo.31924026890081* (Old Estonian Fairy Tales). Moreover, his poem *Kalevipoeg|https://archive.org/details/kalevipoeg* (Kalev's Son) is considered the national epic of Estonia.
The fairy tales were translated by F. Löwe into German and then translated into English by one of the translators for Andrew Lang’s *fairy books|https://archive.org/details/greyfairybook00lang/page/n9/mode/2up*, likely his wife, Leonora. These translations are slightly altered, targeted more for children, but are nonetheless the translations used, as they are joyful, recreate rhyming and include gorgeous artwork by H. J. Ford and G. P. Jacomb Hood.
